Learn to see and express your subject in Pastel
with Lyn Mellady
Pastel has been my favorite medium for over 30 years. It has wonderful colours and a tactile connection with the painting process and has really long term conservation properties. I also love to enthuse artists be they beginners or advanced, at all times giving the 'why' along with the 'how to', to empower the artist's methods.
My favorite subjects involve water. It can be shoreline or inland. Its story is always changing with light, weather and life. Since swapping my teaching career for art in my early 30's I really consider myself fortunate. I have been able to paint full time, had works published, awarded, acquired by government collections and am still enthused and challenged by nature.
I now can share selected self-study courses for those who cannot join me live on Zoom, or in a studio. This video content is from live lessons. Footage is divided into steps for convenience and processes and reasons are is fully explained.

What people say about Lyns lessons
Thank you. It has been amazing painting under your tutelage, I have learnt so much! Before your classes, I was just happily splashing pigment on paper without any regard for sunlight or shadow or anything. Now I know better, thanks to you. Also, thank you for taking the time to compile the lessons. I really appreciate it. Looking forward to more.

With no previous formal training and knowing nothing about soft pastels, Lyn has guided me from someone very unsure of what to do, to someone brave enough to now create my own art pieces. Through well-defined explanations including terminology, techniques, choice of colours, tonal values, the artist’s viewpoint, aerial perspective, environmental light sources, seasonal changes and new knowledge of water and atmosphere, I’ve begun to understand, produce and grow in confidence. Always the perfect teacher, Lyn doesn’t assume you know and never makes you feel silly for asking basic or simple questions. Her mentoring has encouraged growth in my personal journey and artistic capabilities. Thank you, Lyn, for all that you have done and continue to do…

Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed attending her pastel classes from her home studio, an en plein air weekend at a few beaches and several terms of zoom classes.
Lyn's topics of inland waterways and seascapes are carefully chosen. She helps you to notice blocks of colour, then specific shapes and detail. We studied the sea at different times of the day, showing the light behind, in front of and beside the subject. We learned how to form shadows and reflections.
Lyn's videos are very informative and detailed, and she lays out the pastels needed, so that you can match the colours.
Lyn's knowledge of her topics and medium, and her sense of humour, make her tutorials relaxed and enjoyable.
I have learned so much from her.

Lyn Mellady is a highly professional and generous teacher and gives freely of her knowledge. She gives in depth teachings with good constructive thoughts. As a student my own work has benefitted from watching Lyn's approach to and observation of subjects, and from her feedback, and I certainly intend to continue to be a student of hers.
